LANGUAGE FAMILY MUSEUM
Last Updated: 21 February 2011
On this page you can listen to 20-25 hours of clear textual recordings in 528 languages organized by language family so that you can compare closely related languages in sequence in order to hear how similar or different genetically related languages sound to each other. Many if not most of the languages presented here are endangered and have little or no other documentation. Thus, these recording of a comprehensible text can serve as a resource to study them as well as to document their existence in the event of their extinction.
The Background of these Language Museums:
The audio New Testaments that form the specimens in these museums are produced by the Faith Comes by Hearing project of Hosanna Ministries. As this organization pursues its spiritual goal, it is also producing a linguistic resource of incalculable value and making great strides towards documenting and preserving the endangered languages of the world. Because of the missionary orientation of the producers, these museums are strong in rare and exotic tongues, though they lack specimens in some of the most commonly studied Western European languages.
Apart from the wide variety of languages offered, these scriptural recordings are special for another reason, namely their audio quality. Rather than being simply read by a single voice, the great majority of them are performed in a lively and exciting narrative style as audio-dramas by up to 180 different voices, accompanied by tastefully appropriate theme music. As you browse through the collection, if you find a specimen that you would like to own, you may download a copy for free by clicking on the widget. To download additional versions, you will be prompted to install an Audio Bible Ambassador program. If you wish to keep a copy, I would encourage you to download it sooner rather than later, as from time to time there are interruptions in the streaming, and sometimes languages cease to be available altogether, so the fact that you find it today does not necessarily mean you will be able to listen to or download it tomorrow. Each complete version is about 620 MB, and while those from larger and more popular languages generally download rather quickly, those from small and obscure languages can take many, many hours, but by becoming an Ambassador and hosting it on your computer, you will expedite its further distribution.
The organization of the languages on widget is, in principle, alphabetical. However, many of the world's languages have various names and/or can be spelled in a variety of ways. Thus, the rare and exotic language you are looking for may be on the widget, but you may not be able to find it simply by scrolling down. As I myself first listened, enthralled, to the entire sampling both of languages for which I had unsuccessfully sought audio recordings for years, and of many more languages I had never heard or even heard of before, I began a process of systematically identifying and classifying exactly what I was listening to by tracking it down, sometimes with great difficulty, on Ethnologue, and the result is the two organizational schemes I offer here for facilitated listening and study: the genetic language family museum and the geographic language museum.
Suggested Procedure for Visiting the Museums:
Whether you are simply browsing casually through the collection, listening systematically and comparatively to the members of a certain family or the languages of a certain region of the world, or actively using these recordings to study a particular language, I would recommend that you open both museums in separate tabs (click to open the Geographic Language Museum now as well). Scroll down the page of the museum you are visiting in order to find the name of the language you want to listen to, then play the selection on the widget in the other museum so as not to lose your place on the list you are perusing. To find the language on the widget, type its name in the "search language" slot that will appear when you click on the arrow between "English" and "Matthew."
Please note that you certainly need not listen to the default beginning of the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 1 - simply click on the arrows to select other books and chapters. As Matthew 1 opens with a dry genealogical listing of names, it would be better to begin linguistic sampling with John 1: "In the beginning was the Word..."
As indicated above, even if you have no other resources at all, the 20-25 hours of recording of a text whose meaning you can understand by reading in a language known to you as you listen to this new one should enable you to use these audio New Testaments to actively study and learn a language. Of course, it would be ideal to have more resources, at very least a text or transcript in the language itself. Unfortunately, many of the languages offered here are so rare and exotic that these do not seem to be readily available, but you may find some at the World Bible Translation Center, at Biblica, at the SWORD Project, or at the Unbound Bible. Failing that, the music in these audio-dramas can be used as a cue to your position in the text as it is the same in almost all versions. So, listen to the same chapter and verse in a language you understand first, then to the new language so as to keep your orientation.
If you are actively looking for a short sound sample of a specific language that is not available here, you may well find it at the Global Recording Network, a similar project that claims to have some degree of Christian message or teaching (although nothing on the scale of a complete New Testament) in 5,800 languages.
Legend:
Italics indicate languages not found on the widget - these are mainly popular or commonly studied Western European languages from lands that have long been Christian. I have put them on the lists because I know visitors will search for them, and I hope that some may be able to provide sources for them. FCBH does make and sell audio-drama New Testaments for a number of these, and I will provide direct links to alternate sources when I can find them.
Blue type indicates that I cannot classify the language. Any assistance in identifying these blue languages would be greatly appreciated.
Burgundy underlining of a language name indicates a link to an alternate site for listening to the New Testament in that language.
Please
if you notice any problems with these museums or have any suggestions for improving them.
